Search our dictionary for words used to describe life, the environment and how we deal with it. a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z carbon dioxide: colorless, odorless, gas produced by burning fossil fuels (see ghg). carcinogen: any substance that can cause or aggravate cancer. cells: smallest structural part of living matter capable of functioning as an independent unit. chemical treatment: use of chemicals or a variety of chemical processes to treat waste. chronic effect: adverse effect on life, symptoms recur frequently or develop slowly over a long period of time. clear cut: harvesting all the trees in one area at one time, which sharply alters and destroys vital habitat. climate change: significant change from one climatic condition to another (see global warming). compost: bacteria in soil mixed with garbage, degradable trash breaks down the mixture into organic fertilizer. crop rotation: planting a succession of different crops on the same land area. |
